Alivira TEROXYLIN Oxytetracycline Injection is a broad-spectrum, long-acting (or standard) antibiotic used in livestock like cattle, sheep, goats, and swine.
INDICATIONS
- Respiratory Disease: Pneumonia and shipping fever complex (associated with Pasteurella spp. and Haemophilus spp.).
- Eye Infections: Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis, commonly known as pinkeye.
- Foot and Joint Issues: Foot rot and calf diphtheria (caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum), joint ill, and navel ill.
- Other systemic illnesses: Bacterial enteritis (scours), wooden tongue (Actinobacillus lignieresii), leptospirosis, and acute metritis.
- Respiratory Infections: Bacterial pneumonia (caused by Pasteurella multocida).
- Digestive issues: Bacterial enteritis (scours, colibacillosis) in piglets caused by Escherichia coli.
- Other illnesses: Leptospirosis, atrophic rhinitis, and erysipelas.
- Infections: Pneumonia, heartwater, foot rot, and joint/navel ill.
4. Horses, Dogs, and Cats
- While oxytetracycline injections are sometimes used in small animals or equines for specific conditions (such as tick-borne diseases or Potomac horse fever), use in these species requires careful dosing or is strictly extra-label.
ADMINISTRATION
- Intramuscular (IM): Injections must be made deep into the fleshy part of a thick muscle (usually the neck). Always aspirate (pull back on the syringe plunger) before injecting; if blood appears, you have hit a vessel, so you must withdraw the needle and choose a new site. Do not exceed 10 mL per injection site for cattle and 5 mL for swine.
- Subcutaneous (SC): In cattle and calves, this can be done by making the injection through the loose folds of the neck skin in front of the shoulder. Inject slowly into the area between the skin and muscle.
- Intravenous (IV): Administered into the jugular vein. Because oxytetracycline is highly concentrated, IV injections must be administered very slowly over at least 5 minutes to prevent animal collapse or shock.
- Dosage Frequency: Standard oxytetracycline is typically given once daily for 3 to 5 days, whereas long-acting (LA) formulations are often administered as a single dose that lasts for up to 3 days, with a potential repeat dose after 2 to 3 days if required.
