Alivira OCTAFIL (sulfadiazine & trimethoprim) is a potentiated sulfonamide antibacterial indicated for treating acute, subacute, and chronic bacterial infections in animals.

INDICATIONS

  • Respiratory Infections: Pneumonia, bronchitis, rhinitis, and bacterial infections secondary to viral diseases.
  • Urogenital Infections: Cystitis, vaginitis, metritis, and urethritis.
  • Gastrointestinal Infections: Neonatal diarrhea, salmonellosis, and enteritis.
  • Soft Tissue & Localized Infections: Wound infections, abscesses, severe mastitis, and foul-in-the-foot.

ADMINISTRATION

The route of administration is strictly dictated by the species being treated and must only be done under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian.

  • Cattle & Pigs: Administered via intramuscular (IM) or slow intravenous (IV) injection. The general recommended dose is 1 mL per 16 kg (35 lbs) of body weight, usually given once daily.
  • Horses: Administered exclusively via slow intravenous (IV) injection. It is important that the product is warmed to body temperature and injected slowly to avoid adverse reactions.
  • Dogs & Cats: Administered via subcutaneous (SC) injection only (typically in the loose skin at the top of the neck). The standard dose is generally 1 mL per 8 kg (17.5 lbs) of body weight.
  • Duration: Treatment is typically continued until 2 days after symptoms resolve, but it should not exceed a maximum of 5 to 7 days depending on the infection.
  • Hydration: Animals must have access to clean, free-choice drinking water during treatment to prevent dehydration and potential kidney issues (crystalluria).
  • Safety: IV injections should be done very slowly and interrupted immediately at the first sign of intolerance or shock. Always consult the specific Alivira OCTAFIL product label or your veterinarian for exact volume calculations based on your animal’s weight.
