Alivira OCTAFIL (sulfadiazine & trimethoprim) is a potentiated sulfonamide antibacterial indicated for treating acute, subacute, and chronic bacterial infections in animals.
INDICATIONS
- Respiratory Infections: Pneumonia, bronchitis, rhinitis, and bacterial infections secondary to viral diseases.
- Urogenital Infections: Cystitis, vaginitis, metritis, and urethritis.
- Gastrointestinal Infections: Neonatal diarrhea, salmonellosis, and enteritis.
- Soft Tissue & Localized Infections: Wound infections, abscesses, severe mastitis, and foul-in-the-foot.
ADMINISTRATION
The route of administration is strictly dictated by the species being treated and must only be done under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian.
- Cattle & Pigs: Administered via intramuscular (IM) or slow intravenous (IV) injection. The general recommended dose is 1 mL per 16 kg (35 lbs) of body weight, usually given once daily.
- Horses: Administered exclusively via slow intravenous (IV) injection. It is important that the product is warmed to body temperature and injected slowly to avoid adverse reactions.
- Dogs & Cats: Administered via subcutaneous (SC) injection only (typically in the loose skin at the top of the neck). The standard dose is generally 1 mL per 8 kg (17.5 lbs) of body weight.
- Duration: Treatment is typically continued until 2 days after symptoms resolve, but it should not exceed a maximum of 5 to 7 days depending on the infection.
- Hydration: Animals must have access to clean, free-choice drinking water during treatment to prevent dehydration and potential kidney issues (crystalluria).
