Alivira’s RESFUR (ceftiofur) is a high-potency, broad-spectrum third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic primarily indicated for treating reproductive tract infections, respiratory diseases, and acute foot rot in livestock.
INDICATIONS
1. Reproductive Tract Infections (Post-Calving/Post-Partum)
Ceftiofur is heavily used to manage post-partum complications in livestock, particularly dairy and beef cattle:
- Acute Metritis: Occurring 0 to 14 days post-partum, typically caused by bacterial organisms susceptible to ceftiofur.
- Endometritis & Pyometra: Chronic uterine inflammation and localized pus accumulation.
- Retained Fetal Membranes: Assisting when the placenta fails to pass naturally after birth.
- Uterine Prolapse & Dystocia: Preventing secondary bacterial infections following difficult births or uterine displacement.
2. Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD)
It treats acute respiratory conditions in cattle, commonly known as shipping fever or pneumonia:
- Target Pathogens: Highly effective against Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni.
- Viral Complications: Managing secondary bacterial infections stemming from initial respiratory viruses.
3. Interdigital Necrobacillosis (Foot Rot)
- Treats acute bovine foot rot (pododermatitis).
- Specifically targets the causative anaerobic pathogens Fusobacterium necrophorum and Bacteroides melaninogenicus
ADMINISTRATION
- Shake Vials Vigorously: The sterile suspension must be shaken very well before use to ensure the medication is properly resuspended.
- Route of Administration:
- Cattle: Usually administered via subcutaneous (SC) injection, though some formulations allow for IM use.
- Swine: Exclusively administered via intramuscular (IM) injection.
- Injection Volume Limit: Do not inject more than 15 mL to 15 mL (depending on the exact product and species) per single injection site to ensure proper absorption and minimize tissue irritation. Subsequent injections must be placed at different sites.
Dosing is strictly based on the animal’s weight. Common regimens include:
- For Acute Metritis (Cattle): Administered once daily for 5 consecutive days.
- For Respiratory Diseases / Foot Rot: Often dosed at 1.1 to 2.2 mg/kg body weight, administered once daily for 3 to 5 days.
- For Swine: Commonly dosed at 3 to 5 mg/kg once daily for 3 consecutive days.
Critical Safety Precautions
- NEVER inject into a vein or artery: Accidental intravenous (IV) administration can result in sudden death. Always aspirate the syringe before pushing the plunger to ensure you are not in a blood vessel.
- Withdrawal Times: Because it is an antibiotic, there are specific withdrawal periods before the animal’s meat or milk can be used for human consumption. This varies by the route of administration and the exact Alivira formulation used
